    <title>Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Program</title>
<description>This project is being implemented by Médecins du Monde in Chipinge district, one of the largest and most impoverished districts in Zimbabwe. The HIV prevalence rate in Chipinge is much higher than the national average, due to its location along a transit road that connects Mozambique and South Africa and is therefore exposed to many factors that can speed the spread of HIV/AIDS such as cross-border sex trade and uncontrolled migration. This project aims to strengthen the health sector at the district level to provide HIV/AIDS medical and support services. Project activities include delivery of antiretroviral drugs and infection treatment, counselling and testing, and developing home-based care and support networks for people living with HIV/AIDS.</description>

<resultsAchieved>Results achieved as of end of project include: Médecins du Monde's activities contributed to the development of quality health services in the District of Chipinge, where Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services were introduced in four hospitals and 46 rural health clinics between 2006 and 2009. A total of 35,473 people were tested in 2008 and 2009. Communities were mobilized for constructive preventive and coping responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with formal sensitization sessions for a total of nearly 56,000 people. 156 new volunteer community-based counsellors and 110 volunteer assistants participated in training to prepare them to give these sessions. 100% of patients who consulted health facilities for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) received quality case management and counseling on male and female condom use; over 12,000 STI patients were treated per year. 127 nurses and 5 medical doctors have been trained in such areas as VCT, HIV rapid testing, mother to child HIV prevention, and the treatment of HIV and opportunistic infections. A total of 2,375 orphans received psychosocial, educational and medical support and 1,433 HIV-positive patients received support through the Home-Based Care program.</resultsAchieved>
