    <title>Improved Learning Environment for Children</title>
    <description>This project aims to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for 42,352 Jordanian and Syrian refugee girls and boys attending public schools, and 265 education staff in Amman, Irbid, and Zarqa governorates. The three governorates are hosting the largest number of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating 75 public schools to meet Ministry of Education safety and security standards and training school-community committees for ongoing maintenance and stewardship; (2) providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Education to develop training material on environmental health and non-violent communication and (3) providing training and capacity development for 40 Ministry of Education staff identified to act as trainers of education staff in public schools on the topics outlined above.</description>

    <expectedResults>The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to quality learning and teaching environments for students and school staff within targeted public schools; and (2) strengthened response by school staff to students’ needs in hygiene and psychosocial health issues in targeted public schools.</expectedResults>
    <resultsAchieved>Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2020) include: (1) rehabilitated 72 schools  to Ministry of Education (MoE) standards and project specifications.  These rehabilitated schools contained 58 gender-sensitive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) blocks and 15 WASH blocks constructed to MoE standards. Unused funds from  three excluded and removed schools  facilitated the provision of 1,628 desks to 49 schools; (2) finalized training material  in April 2017, and a total of 53 Department of Education trainers and MOE trainers from 16 directorates successfully completed training on the use of educational methodologies to promote psychosocial awareness and support, and on the promotion of hygiene and care for the school environment; (3) trained 307 trainers (49 principals, 15 administrative staff, 33 counsellors and 210 teachers) from 75 selected schools  on the use of educational methodologies to promote psychosocial awareness and support, and on the promotion of hygiene and care for the school environment; and (4) the first school principals’ forum was held in October 2017 to give school principals a platform to learn from each other. A total of 17 of 26 principals from targeted schools participated. 42,352 students that have benefitted from a better school environment through these trainings. These students are 6 to17 years of age and attend public schools in the Amman, Irbid and Zarqa governorates in Jordan.</resultsAchieved>
