CA-3-D004223001 2026-09-10T06:32:49 This project aims to empower women human rights defenders and organizations to effectively participate in peacebuilding, reconciliation, and human rights processes in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and the West Bank. The project seeks to strengthen beneficiaries’ ability to use national laws and international human rights frameworks to defend and protect women’s rights in conflict settings. Project activities include: (1) providing psychosocial and legal support to help women survivors recover from and seek justice for the physical and psychological violence they have experienced; (2) training women human rights defenders and organizations and other key stakeholders on national and international human rights frameworks, gender-based analysis, and organizational strengthening; (3) developing or improving National Action Plans and implementing the United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) on women, peace and security; and (4) establishing South-South exchanges to facilitate networking, mutual learning and skills building. This project expects to reach about 35,000 beneficiaries (78% women and 22% men) directly in the five countries or territories, including approximately 9,500 women survivors of gender-based violence. It also expects to indirectly reach 200,000 (150,000 women and 50,000 men) beneficiaries nationally, including extended families, community members, networks, government employees, other stakeholders, and another two million indirect beneficiaries internationally through networks, coalitions, and social media. Closed 2018-03-27T00:00:00 2023-12-31T00:00:00 South Sudan 25.00% Colombia 25.00% Congo, Democratic Republic 25.00% Palestine 25.00% United Church of Canada: KAIROS Initiatives Democratic participation and civil society 25.00% Human rights 25.00% Ending violence against women and girls 25.00% Civilian peace-building, conflict prevention and resolution 25.00% 4465836.92 The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased participation of women victims and survivors in peace processes and decision-making related to the defense of human rights and post-conflict development processes; (2) more effective use by civil society organizations, women human rights defenders, government officials and other stakeholders of national laws and international human rights frameworks, such as United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 and related resolutions, to advocate for women’s rights in contexts of conflict; and (3) strengthened capacity and skills of women’s rights organizations and defenders. Results achieved at the end of the project (March 2024) include: (1) successfully reached 26,459 direct beneficiaries (20 183 women and 6 276 men) which is 1.5 times more than the planned target of 17,500 (14,000 women and 3,500 men); (2) 2,064 (82%) out of the 2,515 (2,325 women and 190 men) participants surveyed responded that they are now participating in peace processes; (3) provided counselling and medical accompaniment to 4 850 women who had experienced gender-based violence psychosocial; (4) supported 1 567 women in using legal services; (5) supported 2 194 individuals (1 538 women and 656 men) to participate in workshops on the psychosocial impacts of war and effective accompaniment; (6) established 30 clinics to offer psychosocial support and referrals to medical services to women victims and survivors; (7) trained a total of 4 054 (3 907 women and 147 men) Human Rights facilitators; (8) 9 233 individuals (6 044 women and 3 189 men) completed gender awareness training; and (9) trained 11,049 participants (8,091 women and 2 958 men) during the life of the project on critical issues. This includes national human rights laws and international frameworks, the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women, the United Nations security council resolution 1325, women, peace, and security.
