CA-3-P006167001 2026-08-18T06:32:38 This project aims to slow the expansion of coal in the electricity sector by developing low-carbon alternatives (including solar, wind, and geothermal) and improving energy efficiency and grid upgrades in targeted countries. The Energy Transition Program is one of four programs under the Canada-World Bank Clean Energy and Forests Climate Facility (CCEFCF). This program financing is aimed at strengthening key institutional actors’ capacity to design regulatory incentives to boost energy efficiency and renewable energy markets. This Program provides funding alongside credit financing from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development or the International Development Association. Canada's contribution to the Program expects to leverage more than US$400 million in private and public investment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 22 million tonnes. Results to date include: (1) committed US$95.30 million in concessional loans to two operational projects in South Africa and Indonesia, plus US$99.27 million allocated to two pipeline operations in Mexico and Viet Nam advancing toward World Bank Board approval; (2) in Indonesia, financed the battery storage and transmission behind a results-based electrification program that will connect more than 630,000 new customers (about 2.5 million people) to reliable electricity in the country's eastern regions; and (3) at South Africa's Komati site, supported the Eskom Just Energy Transition Project, which is decommissioning the coal-fired power plant and repurposing the site with wind, solar, and battery storage. The project is also advancing new training facilities to reskill Eskom workers and community members for the clean-energy economy, from solar PV installation to career readiness. Over its lifetime to 2045, the ET window is expected to reduce approximately 21.8 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking roughly 5 million gasoline-powered cars off the road for a year.
