CA-3-P011560001 2026-10-09T04:02:57 This project aims to improve biodiversity and key ecosystem health along Honduras’ Atlantic and Pacific coasts using nature-based solutions. It responds directly to Canada’s commitment to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to safeguard and restore biodiversity. The project focuses on people dependent on these ecosystems, particularly women, youth, and Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, whose livelihoods remain threatened by climate change, habitat loss, and ecosystem degradation. Project activities include: (1) strengthening protected areas governance and management; (2) restoring ecosystems and recovering threatened species through nature-based solutions; (3) improving agroforestry, agriculture, ecotourism and cattle ranching sustainability through model nature-based solutions; (4) strengthening public sector biodiversity policy framework; and (5) enhancing women’s empowerment and Indigenous people’s rights. Operational 2025-03-07T00:00:00 2030-03-31T00:00:00 Honduras 100.00% IUCN, International Union forConservation of Nature and Environmental policy and administrative management 10.00% Biosphere protection 30.00% Bio-diversity 40.00% Site preservation 10.00% Environmental education/training 10.00% 13350000.00 The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved gender-responsive and rights-based protection of natural coastal-marine ecosystems using nature-based solutions with benefits especially for local women and girls, and indigenous peoples; (2) improved gender-responsive and rights-based sustainable use of productive coastal-marine ecosystems implementing nature-based solutions benefiting especially local women and girls, and indigenous peoples; and (3) improved gender-responsive and rights-based restoration of productive coastal-marine ecosystems implementing nature-based solutions benefiting especially local women and girls, and indigenous peoples. Results achieved as of March 2026 include: (1) 82,591.86 hectares under improved protection through the participatory update of the Management Plan of the Protected Areas System of the Southern Zone of Honduras (SAPZSurH) covering 10 protected areas; (2) 679 individuals engaged in protection actions (60% women) and 138 organizations involved; (3) the National Strategy for Indigenous and Afro-descendant Peoples and Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources approved by Government of Honduras; (4) 215.75 hectares placed under restoration actions and 2 subnational restoration plans developed; and (5) 215.75 hectares under sustainable management practices (agroforestry systems) integrating Nature-based Solutions (NbS) approaches into productive landscapes.
