CA-3-P011941001 2026-07-14T06:32:38 This project aims to enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable development in Zanzibar’s unique ecosystems through a nature-based approach. It does so by working closely with local communities to restore and protect mangrove forests, establish climate-smart agroforestry systems, and implement sustainable land and water management practices. The project seeks to empower farmers and community members to adopt climate-resilient agricultural techniques and improve natural resource management through capacity building and training. It also aims to strengthen climate information systems, enabling communities to make informed decisions and respond effectively to changing climate patterns. By integrating gender-responsive approaches, the project ensures the active participation and inclusion of women and marginalized groups. Operational 2023-09-12T00:00:00 2026-12-31T00:00:00 Tanzania 100.00% Community Forests International Biosphere protection 90.00% Bio-diversity 10.00% 5808000.00 The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased influence and leadership powers for women in nature-based climate adaptation enterprises and governance structures in target coastal communities; (2) increased ecological productivity and agriculture land resilience through climate-adaptive agroforestry. It does so to empower women in targeted coastal communities; and (3) increased women-led protection and restoration of coastal mangrove forest biodiversity and associated ecosystem adaptation values in target coastal communities. These outcomes contribute to climate resilience, ecosystem protection, and community empowerment in Zanzibar. Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) supported 2,191 direct beneficiaries (1,779 women and 412 men) from 8 vulnerable coastal communities restore and protect mangrove forests, establish climate-smart agroforestry systems, and implement sustainable land and water management practices; (2) 160 beneficiaries attained leadership or decision-making positions (e.g. chairperson, secretary, treasurer, or farmer training group leader) within local climate adaptation efforts and community organizations; (3) formed 293 women-led farmer training groups to provide ongoing peer learning and collaboration among agroforestry practitioners across the communities targeted by the project; and (4) planted 752,862 seedlings of various species in agroforestry plots across beneficiary communities on the islands of Pemba and Unguja, contributing to long-term ecosystem restoration and strengthening community resilience.
