    <title>Building Democracy</title>
<description>The project aims to foster a greater understanding and an enduring commitment to the values of liberal-democratic governance, the rule of law, and public participation. It intends to do so by building a cadre of trainers and self-sustaining training programs on democratic principles to provide secondary and tertiary education institutions and their students, as well as government officials, with an understanding of their responsibilities and accountability in a system based on the rule of law and respect for civil liberties.</description>

<resultsAchieved>Results at end of project include: According to survey data, courses using the project-supported Fundamentals of Democracy textbook are now being taught in 89 per cent of Ukraine’s universities. Four textbooks were published in 2010-2011 to support the new curriculum on democratic policing in a Political Science course for officer cadets in Ministry of Internal Affairs universities. A 2010 textbook intended to train teachers in the fundamentals of democracy is now used in all pedagogical institutions. In January 2011, a text adapted from the project’s Fundamentals of Democracy text won a national competition becoming the required textbook for a compulsory Grade XI course entitled “The Human in Society”, which will be in use in all 20,000 Ukrainian secondary schools.</resultsAchieved>
