Description and results
Description
This initiative is a sub-project of the Democratic Governance Fund and appears separately to denote that this component is a grant to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). The Gender and Governance Program (GGP) supports the Government of Kenya's efforts to mainstream gender equality into its strategies and programs and the strengthening of civil society organizations that channel citizens' demands to the government on gender equality issues. GGP provides technical support to government institutions and national gender institutions that contribute to achieving equal access to goods and services for women. GGP aims to engender national and local institutional policies and legal frameworks, increase women's participation in governance, and support civil society organizations that articulate the rights of women to have equal access to public services. The program has a wide range of stakeholders and partners, including the Government of Kenya, national and international donors, and civil society organizations.
Results achieved
Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2011) include: the Gender and Governance Program (GGP) has helped build knowledge around gender issues, launching information sharing forums to support civil society organizations. GGP carried out a gender audit of the draft constitution and held a National Women's Conference where 400 women from all over the country attended. This strategic support helped to make Kenya’s new Constitution one of the most gender-sensitive documents in the region. The GGP is taking on a leading role to promote gender-responsive budgeting in education and devolved funds. Local partners successfully lobbied the Government of Kenya to set aside over $3 million in the national budget to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls – a key barrier to school attendance.
