Description

The project aimed to contribute in improving food security by increasing the production and accessibility of agricultural products. The allocated resources helped fund tangible measures to develop knowledge and tools, to coordinate development of proximity irrigation, to strengthen the Ministry of Agriculture, and to build productive and commercialization infrastructures. The project aimed to increase annual agricultural production of rice and market garden produce; to improve access to financial services and technical supervision; to build mini-dams and storehouses; and to rehabilitate rural paths. The project directly targeted over 1,700 families beneficiaries, or a population of over 25,000 people.

Results achieved

Results achieved until the end of the project include: 1) 77 village irrigation zones, 17 ponds, 11 micro-dams and two site weirs were built, and 68 village irrigation zones and 17 ponds have been rehabilitated; 2) 9,885 hectares of new land were developed for irrigated agriculture in the Timbuktu area and 56 hectares in the Mopti area; 3) 24 hectares of weirs have been built in the Koulikoro region; 4) eight agriculture warehouses were built (with a total capacity of 2,160 tons); 5) 17 sections of rural roads with a total length of 89 km have been rehabilitated; 6) the annual production of rice has risen by more than 19,000 tonnes in the Timbuktu area and the annual production of garden produce increased by 1,500 tons in the Mopti area — this additional production meets the annual rice needs of more than 240,000 people; 7) in response to the 2012 food crisis, additional fertilizer was distributed and enabled 50,000 farmers to secure their production of nearly 72,000 tons of rice, equivalent to the annual needs for rice of over 884,000 people; 8) the National Directorate of Rural Engineering has increased its knowledge of water management, received logistical support (computer equipment, transport and office maintenance) and now has the tools required to improve its design, implementation and management of irrigation works under its supervision; and, 9) five training centers offering irrigation training programs were equiped. These results contribute increasing annual agricultural production of rice and vegetable crops in a sustainable way and to improving the marketing infrastructure for these products.
