Description

The project aims to improve the health and school performance of children by providing daily meals to 609,000 schoolchildren living in the most disadvantaged and dry regions of Kenya. The support to the school feeding program seeks to help school-age children suffering from chronic hunger and an insufficient diet, increase attendance at the primary school level, and improve children’s learning conditions. The project reinforces links between school feeding programs and local agricultural production through a new model for food supply. This model pilots the purchase and use of locally available foods grown in these dry regions with more limited agricultural potential. The project also works to enhance the Government of Kenya’s ability to manage school feeding programs, and to ensure sustainability of these programs in the country.

Expected results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (i) improved educational outcomes for boys and girls in disadvantaged arid and semi-arid counties; and (ii) enhanced capacity of the Government of Kenya to manage school feeding programs.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of May 2014 include: (i) daily meals were provided to 760,000 schoolchildren in the most disadvantaged and dry regions of Kenya; and (ii) a pilot cash transfer model supporting local traders and farmers was successfully implemented. These have contributed to improved health and school performance of children living in the most disadvantaged and dry regions of Kenya and improved links between school feeding programs and local agricultural production.
