Description

The project aims to increase drinking water supplies, improve water sanitation, enhance governance of water management services, and contribute to growth of revenues from breeding and gardening production in Burkina Faso’s Sahel region. The project helps to build the infrastructure necessary for targeted communities (drinking water, latrines) and to ensure their sustainable use through the establishment of a participatory governance.

Expected results

Expected results include: (i) increased revenues from breeding and gardening production in 20 communities; (ii) improved drinking water supplies and improved water sanitation for 45,000 people; and (iii) improved governance of water management services and sanitation for approximately 260,000 beneficiaries.

Results achieved

Results as of March 2018 include: (1) completion of a detailed design study and the bidding documents; (2) two rounds of construction of family latrines were implemented, 1,137 family latrines were built or are under construction and 10 institutional latrines were completed or are under construction; (3) the proportion of the population with access to sanitation is on track to achieve 30%, while this rate was near zero in 2014; (4) capacity building of 450 members (of which 85% are women) of various pastoralists and farmers groups by providing inputs, tools, equipment and know-how; (5) the value of their processed animal products (such as meat and milk) increased by 30% since the start of the project.
