Description

This project aims to assist countries in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to sustainably increase their agricultural productivity and improve regional food security, while adapting and building resilience to climate change. The project contributes to a multi-donor funding platform called AgroLAC 2025, coordinated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This fund brings together a broad range of public and private sector donors worldwide. AgroLAC 2025 identifies and supports sustainable agricultural practices and market systems in the Latin America and Caribbean region. AgroLAC has three program pillars: access to markets, productivity of farmers, and agricultural/environmental sector management. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the ability of governments to develop sustainable agricultural plans and policies; (2) strengthening the capacity of farmers to increase productivity through sustainable agricultural intensification, and (3) stimulating trade and access to regional and global food markets for farmers in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access for climate- smart agricultural sector players to regional and global food markets; (2) increased sustainable and climate resilient productivity of targeted farmers (for women and men); and (3) improved sustainable and gender-responsive natural resource management by targeted governments and farmers.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2024 include: (1) approved 13 technical cooperation projects; (2) provided support to PROCOMER to launch 7 calls-for-proposals in Costa Rica for the Green Growth Program. They selected78 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to receive co-financing (35 women-owned) to develop green transformation projects; (3) delivered training and learning materials on sustainable agricultural products or practices and financing services to 2,755 farmers (638 women); (4) managed 10,608 hectares of land in Guatemala using ecosystem-based approaches; (5) designed Agribusiness Marketplace Platform in Connect Americas platform to facilitate international market opportunities for Central American agricultural small and medium enterprises; (6) provided support to strengthen the economic empowerment of 3,074 women in Guatemala to improve their technical capacities for the implementation of sustainable agroforestry management practices in coffee, cardamom, and pepper chains. It also seeks to improve organic production processes, post-harvest processes, and traceability; (7) organized “LAC Flavors Panama 2022” forum in July 2022, which attracted 316 SME agri-food suppliers (152 women and 164 men) from 25 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America; and (8) developed a new credit program, “Agrocredito 8.7”, which primarily targets SMEs operating in rural areas in Honduras and promotes access to agri-food credits to mitigate the effects of climate change in the productive sector through granting credits.
