Description

The project supports the organization of the 22nd conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 22) in the city of Marrakech in Morocco. This project aims to reduce the disastrous consequences of climate change, and constitutes a common receptacle for all the financial partners who support the Moroccan government in the implementation of COP22 activities. The conference discusses issues related to the entry into force, and the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement adopted in December 2015 in Paris during COP21. The Paris Climate Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, with the objective to limit global warming below 2°C, which is the maximum temperature level deemed acceptable to prevent major natural disasters in the future.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) support to the logistical organization of COP22; (2) support to the mobilization of civil society for COP22; (3) support to communication activities related to COP22; and (4) support to the preparation and organization of related events and sides-events of COP 22.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2017 include: (1) support was provided to 9 associations that developed innovative projects/initiatives in areas of adaptation, mitigation, and awareness of climate change; (2) strong participation of civil society and national associations in the COP22 conference (civil society and innovation zone), particularly through their participation in the debates organized in the pavilions and agoras that were made available (youth, research and innovation, territories, women, etc); (3) exchanges and sharing of knowledge and experiences were conducted between peers from different countries; and (4) the scope of communication and awareness raising on the issue of climate change and mobilization of non-state actors in favor of the climate was expanded. The project allowed a strong involvement and a very active participation of youth and women in the debates and discussions related to the issue of climate change.
