Description and results
Description
The project aims to empower adolescent girls in the Philippines through the provision of comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health services. In the Philippines, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues are arguably the most significant impediment to women’s empowerment. The country has the highest fertility rate in Southeast Asia, with women in the lowest wealth quintile having an average of 5.2 children, and with over 22% of women bearing children before the age of 19. Sexual Health and Empowerment (SHE) Philippines is addressing these issues by providing at least 85,000 women and girls, men, and boys with improved access to SRHR services. SHE is expected to indirectly benefit 270,000 people situated in conflict-affected and disadvantaged regions in the Philippines. It provides institutional support to women’s rights organizations working on SRHR and gender based violence in the Philippines. The project also supports the implementation of the Government of the Philippines’ Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law.
Expected results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) enhanced utilization of gender-sensitive sexual and reproductive health information and services (public and private) by women of reproductive age, adolescent girls, and boys in remote conflict affected and disadvantage regions; and (2) improved effectiveness of women’s rights organizations to advance rights related to sexual and reproductive health and prevention of gender-based violence in remote, conflict-affected and disadvantaged regions.
Results achieved
Results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) 68,033 individuals (99% female) received family planning services from trained health services providers in 21 municipalities supported by the project. These services include 4,112 (95% women) new family planning acceptors, bringing the total to 8,999 individuals since the start of the project; (2) 11,970 (77% women) community influencers and peer educators trained and supported to conduct awareness raising on sexual and reproductive health rights; (3) reached 36,420 individuals (74% women) through SRHR learning sessions in the communities; (4) 10 local implementing partners reported increased confidence in delivering effective programs on SRHR and gender-based violence prevention; and (5) 12 advocacy strategies and public engagements implemented in collaboration with government, women’s rights and youth-led organizations.
