Description and results
Description
This project is part of Canada’s Women’s Voice and Leadership Program, which supports local and regional women’s organisations and networks that are working to promote women’s rights, and advance women’s empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. This is done by supporting activities, building institutional capacity, and promoting network and alliance-building as women’s rights and feminist organizations are critical agents of change. The Program also responds to the globally recognized, significant gap in funding and support to women’s rights organizations and movements around the world. This project is implemented by Cuso International in 14 regions of Peru. It strengthens the capacity of a wide range of women's rights organizations, including 4 leading national organizations, 180 grassroots organizations and 20 national and sub-national feminist networks.
Expected results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved management and sustainability of local women’s rights organizations in Peru, particularly those representing vulnerable and marginalized women and girls; (2) enhanced performance of women’s rights organizations’ programming and advocacy to advance gender equality and empower women and girls in Peru; and (3) increased effectiveness of national and sub-national women’s rights platforms, networks and alliances to affect gender-sensitive policy change and policy implementation in Peru.
Results achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) at least 50% of women supported by the project have increased their voice and/or presence in public spaces (based on 6,935 direct participants). This includes 119 Indigenous leaders from the Ucayali, Cusco, Ayacucho, Apurimac, Puno, Loreto and Junín regions; 99 feminist and LGBTQIA+ activists through the Feminist Political Schools on Power; 204 survivors of Forced Sterilizations and associated local NGOs; (2) 1,728 participants who benefited directly from the Strategic Response Funds (SRF) which reached 22 Women's Rights Organizations (WROs); and (3) 1,200 direct participants in the Competitive Innovation Fund, which worked with 11 WROs. The four Peruvian implementing partners (1. National Organization of Indigenous Andean and Amazonian Women of Peru (ONAMIAP), 2. the Legal Office for the Defence of Women’s Rights (DEMUS), 3. Manuela Ramos Movement (MMR), and 4. Flora Tristan Centre for Peruvian Women), in collaboration with 109 women rights organizations, 19 national networks in Peru and 3 international networks: (1) contributed to the prevention and sanction of harassment and abuse of women in political life through the approval of legislation, a significant accomplishment; (2) supported 114 women candidates in the 2022 Regional and Municipal elections through capacity building workshops; (3) worked with judges and justices of the peace on access to justice via workshops entitled “Promoting rights and a violence free life” ; and (4) broadcast radio spots in Spanish, Asheninka and Quechua highlighting multiple forms of violence experienced by women and the need for unity in fighting gender inequality.
