Description

The project aims to advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of adolescent girls, reduce sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and support advocacy for SRHR in Sierra Leone and Malawi. For adolescent girls in Sierra Leone and Malawi, the rate of maternal mortality and SGBV is very high. The project provides support to SGBV survivors, including clinical services, legal services, and advocacy, in addition to conducting education sessions on SGBV prevention and referral. The project works to strengthen the capacity of healthcare practitioners to provide high quality, gender-sensitive, youth-friendly and rights-based SRHR services. Project activities include: (1) providing training for staff that is tailored to the specific health needs of adolescents; (2) creating safe spaces for adolescents to receive SRHR services in private; and (3) working with healthcare practitioners on national health objectives. In partnership with the Ministry of Health, healthcare institutions are better able to respond to the SRHR needs of women and girls, empowering them to live healthy lives and make informed choices around their health and rights.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved provision of gender-sensitive and rights-based sexual and reproductive health services to adolescents; (2) improved provision of quality services to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; and (3) improved access to high quality comprehensive obstetric and neonatal care by women and adolescent girls.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) enabled the use of family planning methods by 6,473 adolescent girls in Malawi and 8,826 adolescent girls in Sierra Leone; (2) achieved a reduction of 63% on the ratio of stillbirths per 1000 live births at intervention facility in Sierra Leone; (3) achieved a reduction of 27% on the maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 live births at intervention facility in Malawi; (4) achieved a reduction of 54% on the rate of major direct obstetric complications to deliveries at intervention facility in Sierra Leone; (5) increased the percentage of pregnant women and girls attending at least 4 prenatal consultations in the Malawi intervention district, from 44% to 68%; (6) established an influx of 25,274 patient visits to the free adolescent and youth friendly services clinic; and (7) trained 1643 police officers and district stakeholders in gender based violences and the identification and care of survivors.
