Description and results

Description

February 2018 – Following a coup d’état in March 2013, the humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) rapidly deteriorated. In 2017, the country continued to be plagued by violent conflict between armed groups and inter-communal violence. The number of displaced people in the country has increased to over 1.24 million, comprised of roughly 688,000 internally displaced people and 556,375 refugees – the highest number ever recorded in CAR. In 2018, an estimated 2.5 million people in CAR will require humanitarian assistance. With GAC’s support, Action Against Hunger (ACF) is providing assistance to address the urgent needs of up to 37,250 conflict-affected people in Basse-Kotto prefecture, CAR. This project focuses on improving access to clean water, the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, and the provision of basic health services to women in displacement camps. Project activities include: (1) constructing or rehabilitating up to 28 water points, benefitting up to 32,457 people; (2) constructing up to 26 latrine blocks; (3) providing up to 380 pregnant women with basic health care in rural areas; and (4) screening and treating up to 1,050 children suffering from severe or moderate acute malnutrition.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1)increased access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities; (2) improved therapeutic support for those suffering from severe acute malnutrition; and (3) increased access to pre and post natal health care for pregnant women. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in Basse-Kotto prefectures, CAR.
