Description and results

The project aims to create a funding facility dedicated to empowering women and girls to participate in the Jordanian economy, contributing to inclusive economic growth in the Mashreq region. The Facility is doing this by providing technical support and funding for strategic regional and country-level initiatives based on Action Plans developed by the respective governments, in collaboration with the private sectors and civil society, and supported by the international community. The project is identifying and addressing gender constraints to women’s full participation in society and improving women’s access to economic opportunities. This is one of three parts of the Mashreq Gender Facility project in Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, which has a total budget of $10 million.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) gender constraints to women’s full participation in society in Jordan are identified and addressed; and (2) women’s access to economic opportunities in the Mashreq are improved through the implementation of country-level action plans.

Results achieved

Results achieved by the World Bank Group through the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors as of March 2021 include: (1) Provided technical expertise in the review of country policies and laws related to women’s economic opportunities (For example: new law criminalizing sexual harassment in Lebanon, ongoing work to implement Jordan’s Code of Conduct for Public Transport, and policy recommendations on the draft law on domestic violence—which were approved by Iraq’s Council of Ministers; and (2) Delivered the first webinar series under the Women’s Employment Peer Learning Platforms in partnership with the Chambers of Commerce and business associations in Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq (Baghdad and Erbil) to promote gender diversity and family-friendly workplaces in the private sector and to attract and retain more female employees.
