Description 

The project aims to improve access to quality health services adapted to the needs of adolescent girls and women in Mali, in the regions of Bamako, Kayes, Koulikoro, Segou and Sikasso. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating and providing equipment in public school institutions to address clinical training needs in primary health care/SRHR and environmental standards; (2) providing training and coaching teachers and supervisors on development programs in primary health care/sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality and environment; (3) implementing safe pilot facilities for pregnant women and survivors of gender based violence; and (4) developing and implementing comprehensive sexual education campaigns for adolescents and on positive masculinity for men and boys. The project aims to improve access to inclusive, quality and gender-responsive health system for 500,000 people, mainly women and girls. The project also aims to provide training to 2,800 health professionals.

Expected results 

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased availability of new qualified health professionals in primary health care and sexual and reproductive health and rights; (2) increased use by women and girls of gender-sensitive primary health services/sexual and reproductive health and rights; and (3) increased effectiveness of the Health Human Resources Directorate in ensuring the development of an innovative and equitable model for the training, distribution and retention of healthcare workers.

Results achieved 

The results achieved as of March 2025 include: 1) The provision of care to 1,654 women and girls aged 15 and above for cases of gender-based violence (GBV), primarily involving physical, emotional, economic abuse, and rape; 2) The delivery of sexual and reproductive health services to 43,056 individuals across the seven community-university health centers supported by the project; 3) The awareness-raising of 301,633 adolescents, including 202,765 girls, through project-developed strategies on sexual and reproductive health, covering topics such as family planning, gender-based violence, early pregnancy, child marriage, and health rights; 4) The implementation of 21 training sessions integrating intern reception and supervision in health, competency-based approaches, action research, simulation-based communication techniques, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender equality. These trainings targeted faculty members, mentors, and supervisors from the Faculty of Medicine and Odontostomatology, the National Institute for Health Sciences Training, and the Association of Private Health Schools; 5) A 99.3% satisfaction rate among women and girls (1,224 out of 1,233 respondents) regarding primary health care and sexual and reproductive health services, including their related rights in terms of reception, respect, confidentiality, and the scope of services provided at the community-university health centers supported by the project; 6) The training of 305 health care providers, including 201 women, in mental health care, enabling them to diagnose adjustment difficulties, psychosocial issues, mental health disorders, and GBV cases, and to ensure appropriate care.
