Description and results
Description
This project aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services available to the most vulnerable adolescent girls and women in Benin, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Project activities include: (1) supporting the financial autonomy of vulnerable and marginalized women and adolescent girls in order to reduce the economic and gender barriers to SRH services; (2) providing training to health care providers and administrators of health-care facilities on the provision of gender-responsive and adolescent-friendly SRH services; (3) providing technical and material assistance to women’s and adolescent girls’ rights organizations and defenders; and (4) providing equipment (including water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure) to health-care facilities. The project expects to benefit approximately 2 million vulnerable women and adolescent girls across the three countries. This project works in partnership with Lawyers Without Border Canada and SOCODEVI (Société de coopération pour le développement international).
Expected results
The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased equitable use of health services by diverse groups of women and adolescent girls who are rights holders, especially victims of sexual and gender based violence; (2) improved provision of gender-responsive, inclusive and accountable sexual and reproductive health and rights services by health care providers to diverse groups of women and adolescent girls; and (3) improved effectiveness of stakeholders, particularly local women’s and adolescent girls’ rights organizations, in advocating for evidence based health services, policies and legal frameworks.
Results achieved
Results achieved as of March 2023 include: (1) set up and trained project teams in the three countries; (2) identified the 150 women's and teenagers' groups that will be supported and formalised; (3) identified the 60 health centres to be targeted by the project and determined their precise needs for medical inputs, rehabilitation and training for health professionals; (4) identified the 18 organisations for the defence of the rights of women and adolescent girls targeted by the project and specified their needs in terms of training, technical support or equipment; and (5) carried out an inventory of the legislative and institutional frameworks in terms of sexual and reproductive health and rights and gender-based violence, and completed an analysis of the gaps between these frameworks and international standards in order to conduct advocacy based on these gaps.
