Project profile — Nuclear and Radiological Security - Technical support from the Canada Border Services Agency

This project provides subject-matter experts from the Canada Border Services Agency to increase nuclear and radiological security globally. Project activities include: (1) providing expert guidance to multilateral workshops, exercises and planning meetings organized by the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism; and (2) providing technical expertise to international consultancy meetings organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency on improving nuclear detection techniques.

The expected outcome for this project includes improved ability of border guards, security agencies and nuclear regulators globally to detect, identify and prevent the illicit trafficking of nuclear or radiological materials.

Result achieved as of the end of the project (March 2023) includes the participation of subject-matter experts from the Canada Border Services Agency in six nuclear and radiological security capacity-building events globally. This included a consultancy meeting organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency on its Nuclear Security Series related to the assessment of alarms for nuclear and other radioactive material out of regulatory control—held in March 2022 in Vienna, Austria.
