Project profile — Sustainable Integration of Internally Displaced Persons in Pemba

This project aims to strengthen the resilience of internally displaced persons and host communities in the city of Pemba in Cabo Delgado province. The project focuses on displaced women and girls, and local authorities dealing with the challenges of a massive increase in Pemba’s population. Project activities include: (1) facilitating participatory and gender-inclusive neighbourhood level planning, social service provision and management; (2) promoting community construction of prioritized infrastructure and public services; and (3) building the capacity of local authorities and communities.

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased engagement of communities; (2) improved living conditions for vulnerable women and girls within host communities; and (3) increased institutional capacities of local authorities.

Results achieved as of March 2025 include: (1) improved access to essential services for the Mahate neighborhood population of 16,868 individuals (4,865 internally displaced persons) by implementing 8 community infrastructure interventions, including 2 public services and 6 community infrastructures; (2) engaged 434 individuals (242 women, 135 men and 57 youth) in participatory planning sessions across Mahate neighborhoods, enhancing inclusive urban planning and community engagement; (3) produced and handed over 27 thematic maps to local authorities, supporting evidence-based urban planning and resilience strategies; (4) reached 38,179 individuals (20,229 women and 17,950 men, including 6,453 internally displaced persons) through campaigns promoting sustainable integration of internally displaced persons and raising awareness on migration rights, gender-based violence prevention, and peacebuilding; (5) trained 38 activists (32 women and 6 men) in mental health and psychosocial support; and (6) supported 198 vulnerable women with livelihood packages, including vocational training and micro-enterprise support.
