This project seeks to enhance Nigeria’s ability to reduce poverty in an equitable and sustainable way by putting in place more effective governance related to climate change. The project has five main activities: (i) conducting research studies on the best strategies to adapt to climate change; (ii) undertaking community-level adaptation pilot projects; (iii) supporting the development of a Nigeria Climate Change Adaptation Strategy; (iv) developing and using climate change education and outreach materials, and (v) developing gender-specific tools and mechanisms. The project is implemented by a consortium of Cuso International and International Coach Federation (ICF) Marbek in collaboration with the Nigerian Environmental Study /Action Team (NEST).

Results achieved as of the end of the project (December 2012) include: (i) Three socio-economic research reports on community-based strategies to adapt to climate change in key sectors and eco-regional zones, including an assessment of vulnerabilities and needs were produced. A technical report of climate change scenarios, demonstrating significant potential changes in climate patterns in different parts of the country was produced. (ii) The National Adaptation Strategy and Plan of Action for Climate Change on Nigeria, which the project initiated and played a critical role in developing, was approved by the federal government and put forward as a case study at the 2012 UN Climate Change Conference. (iii) Seven pilot projects were carried out in 15 communities to assess appropriate climate change adaptation measures. The projects worked on supporting the 15 communities to better manage crops, engage women in decision-making, and manage finances. (iv) A gender and climate change toolkit, intended to strengthen the participation and the role of women and men in climate change adaptation was developed. The toolkit provides guidelines to stakeholders on integrating gender perspectives into climate change, in recognition that women are typically the most adversely affected by climate change, which puts their ability to earn a living further at risk.
