Description

This project has improved reproductive health in Nigeria by increasing access to safe motherhood kits, contraceptive commodities, and other reproductive health services. The project has operated in selected areas within 15 States to improve the quality of reproductive health care, including through strengthening the logistics and management systems for contraceptive supplies. It has also helped clients to make better-informed decisions about their own reproductive health.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project include: (1) 510 health care workers, the majority of whom were females, were trained on the Contraceptives Logistics Management System (CLMS), compared to 44 workers trained in 2003, one year before the project started. The CLMS is an important tool to manage and chart progress to ensure adequate supply of reproductive health commodities; (2) Training of 50 representatives from non-governmental organizations including faith- and community-based organizations on issue-based communication skills in order to build awareness on maternal and child health related issues; (3) Decline in perinatal death from 20 per 1000 live births to 7 per 1000 live births in secondary health care facilities, through provision of better labour and perinatal care; (4) The utilization of male and female condoms nearly doubled; male condom usage increased from 6.9M in 2007/08 to 12.6M in 2008/09, while female condom usage increased from 88,600 in 2007/08 to 149,400 in 2008/09.
