Description

The Protecting Health and Accountability project aims to protect the delivery of essential health services to the poor in Ethiopia while also promoting accountability within public services. Working with other members of the international community to meet these broad objectives, CIDA is supporting specific activities including the purchase and distribution of essential health materials, and building the capacity of civil society to monitor the delivery of public services. Among the goals of this project are improved coverage of basic health services (such as childhood immunization and malaria control) throughout Ethiopia, and strengthened civil society engagement in promoting public accountability to protect basic service delivery. All CIDA disbursements for this project have been completed.

Results achieved

End of project results to which CIDA contributed to as of December 2010 include the purchase and distribution of critical health materials to 750,000 households, including 3.2 million insecticide-treated bed-nets, which have contributed to a deep decline in malaria outpatient cases by 67%, malaria admission by 54% and malaria deaths by 55 percent. A total of 12 lead civil society organizations and their partners, representing a total of about 50 groups operating in approximately 80 woredas (districts), cities or sub-cities have implemented Ethiopian social accountability pilot projects concentrating on education, health, water and sanitation, and agriculture. These pilot projects have contributed to improved social service provisions and effectiveness in service delivery, increased awareness regarding citizens’ rights and responsibilities, and improvement in relationships between civil society and regional and local governments.
