Description

The project supports the Government of Nepal in its movement towards democracy with specific initiatives that enable the population to actively participate in the upcoming election of a Constituent Assembly and the drafting of a new Constitution. The project focuses on three key areas: civic education, local conflict resolution, and media training. The initiative aims to provide greater and improved access to information, understanding of rights surrounding the election, and increased ability of Nepalis to participate in informed debate related to the elections.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (July 2011) include: 308,000 people were sensitized (184,800 women and 123,200 socially marginalized) on fair electoral practices and constitutional issues; 119 national and local public consultation workshops were conducted, involving 4,800 participants (2000 women); 63 sessions of training of trainers to conduct civic education on Constituent Assembly produced 2,000 trainers (800 women and 1,200 socially marginalized); over 30,000 copies of a booklet on Constituent Assembly recommendations were produced and distributed; 26,681 people were engaged regarding federalism issues; and the capacity of 109 journalists was enhanced related to reporting of parliamentary, constitutional, and democratic issues via local and national media. As a result of support provided to the advocacy work of community organizations and the work of the Constituent Assembly, popular citizen demands are increasingly being integrated into the new constitution.
