Description 

Through a CIDA contribution, John Roper and Associates is supporting the Government of Cuba's National Department of Forests to improve forest management. This project consists of providing technical assistance and equipment towards the implementation of the 10-year National Forestry Program and the National Forestry Strategy (2005-2015). The project aims to: 1) help strengthen the protection and conservation of forestry resources; 2) help augment the economic benefits of the forestry sector as a key part of the national economy; and 3) strengthen the capacity of the rural population to contribute to the development of the forestry sector and ensure that the rural population is more involved in that development.

Results achieved 

Results achieved as of September 2013 include: increased the forest cover in Cuba by 106,000 hectares (+1%) through the introduction of new nursery technology and technical assistance on reforestation; modernized the collection, analysis, storage and retrieval of forest management information; implemented an integrated early warning system to prevent forest fires by using satellite and GPS technology; developed a national forest practices code; conducted an economic analysis of the forestry sector, which will assist Cuba to increase the production of forestry products; implemented a public awareness program of the multiple values of forests; developed detailed maps of forestry cover provide Cuba with valuable information on quantity and quality of species to support sound forest and watershed management; developed and implemented a gender equality strategy for the forest sector; and implemented a comprehensive training program on environmental, economic, and social themes of forest development.
