Description

In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Statistics Canada, SACEMA (the South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis of Stellenbosch University) proposes to provide an innovative new quantitative planning tool to support a more integrated national response to the HIV/AIDS and TB epidemics in South Africa. The goal of the project is to support effective management of the dual TB/HIV epidemics and to help stabilize and reduce the incidence and impact of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2013 include: SACEMA staff have produced 32 papers on the theory and application of epidemiological surveillance, and reviewed 13 scientific papers and 18 proposals in areas related to HIV/AIDS incidence estimation and epidemiological surveillance. SACEMA has emerged as an established mainstream player internationally, in the debate on HIV treatment as prevention. SACEMA provides technical support to the Joint United Nations Program on Aids, the American President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the World Health Organisation. SACEMA continues to influence national policy through its participation on South African National Department of Health task teams on contraceptive policy, incidence estimation, and Treatment as Prevention. Web-based tools relevant to HIV incidence estimation are available on its website, and are used by reputable national and international institutions.
