Description

This project aims to reduce traffic on the national highway that runs through the commune of Carrefour by improving the flow of traffic in and out of Port-au-Prince. It also aims to improve the local economy and safety for the citizens of Carrefour. The project's main components are: construction of one kilometre of road, installation of equipment and facilities over 6.8 km of road (lighting, drainage, traffic signals, and landscaping), construction of a bus terminal, and related studies. This project is one of two parts of a $15.5 million contribution. It has been divided for administrative reasons.

Results achieved

Results achieved by this project, which ended in March 2013, include: Construction of the Route des Rails is fully complete. Set-up and installation of facilities such as lighting, drainage, signage, and landscaping along 6.8 kilometres of the road is complete. Construction of the road improves traffic in this sector considerably, facilitates access to the city of Port-au-Prince from the south, and reduces traffic congestion in a commune of 469,019 inhabitants. These results have contributed to reducing the transit time between the South and the capital, which reduces traffic congestion and transport costs for goods destined for the market. More than four million people benefit from this road.
