Description

This project aims to strengthen natural resource management and improve the way in which environmental policy is implemented in five regional governments in Peru (Piura, La Libertad, Loreto, Arequipa, and Cusco) and in key agencies within the central government. The project seeks to do this by training and coaching, research and policy development, and by creating linkages and knowledge sharing opportunities (such as internships, conferences, and working groups) among key stakeholders and experts in the private, public, civil society, and academic sectors.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved natural resources management practices and policies in the five targeted regional governments of Piura, La Libertad, Loreto, Arequipa, and Cusco; and (2) improved planning and coordination on natural resources management between key central government institutions and regional governments.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of December 2018 include: (1) 9,403 people (54% of which were public officials) participated in diverse spaces of analysis and debate on issues related to natural resources management, economic development and gender equality; (2) 429 public officials (of which 206 were women) were trained through 15 editions of an intermediate diploma course (Diplomado as it is called in Spanish), on public management, environment and natural resources; (3) the capacity of researchers, women and men, and the quality and relevance of their papers, as well as the gender mainstreaming in these papers was improved; and (4) the Consorcio de Investigación Económica y Social (CIES) obtained approximately CDN $400,000 from the Peruvian Government to undertake impact assessments of interventions financed through the public budget, this ensures this think tank`s sustainability. The project has provided evidence for decision-making, and has given opportunities to Embassy officials for policy dialogue with high-level Peruvian public servants and authorities, including the President of the Republic and its ministers.
