Description

The goal of the project is to strategically strengthen the next generation of Caribbean leaders to inspire and guide governance reforms and regional development in a gender and environment-sensitive manner. Institutional assessments, more effective human resource policies, technical assistance, networking and sharing international best practices support regional institutions to develop world class leadership development programs. It also aims to work with Caribbean public sector institutions to identify and train potential leaders, and to more effectively manage, motivate and train their human resources. It is expected that senior public servants in the region demonstrate greater accountability, cooperation and competence in handling complex regional challenges, and built significant relationships with their Canadian and regional counterparts.

Expected results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased consensus and focus on strategic interventions to promote private sector development; (2) improved enabling environment for business development, trade and integration; (3) enhanced capacity of clusters and firms to increase productivity and sustainably compete in national, regional and global markets.

Results achieved

Results achieved by the Inter-American Development Bank through the support of the Government of Canada and other international donors as of the end of the project include : (1) increased the number of knowledge products from 48 to 54 with the completion of broadband maps for the six Organization of Eastern Caribbean States countries; (2) supported the institutional strengthening plans of four different private sector development institutions as well as 13 policy proposals; and (3) completed two projects under the Innovation Window and created more than 660 jobs to date – a number of which are centered on the introduction of environmentally friendly products and/or processes, and include economic opportunities for women and youth. These results have contributed to enhancing sustainable regional private sector development strategies, improving the enabling environment for business development, trade, and integration, as well as enhancing the capacity of Caribbean small and medium-sized enterprises led by female and male entrepreneurs.
