Description

The project aims to increase the food security of men, women and children in targeted areas in South Sudan. It seeks to increase fish harvests and to introduce commercially oriented fishing practices in fishing communities. Activities include: (1) the construction and improvement of basic infrastructure like fish-receiving centres, collection points, landing sites and markets in strategic areas along the rivers; (2) the provision of training to men and women on fishing techniques and fish processing; (3) the creation of business associations and training for women on business development; and (4) the provision of technical support to the state government to conduct fish stock assessments.

Expected results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased quantity of both fresh fish, as well as fish products produced by fisher folk, is available for consumption; (2) increased small-business development, particularly fish processing, by women in fishing communities; and (3) improved fish resource management and the delivery of services to the fishery sector by the relevant state governments.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of April 2019 include: (1) 2 market stalls were constructed and officially opened, 1 in Juba and 1 in Nimule, providing an average of 3,522 kg/day of fresh and processed fish. This has enabled small-business development and increased incomes of fisherfolks. It has also increased the supply of hygienic fresh and dried fish products available in the markets; (2) 5 business association groups have been formed comprised of 151 women, providing support and training in business skills and income generating activities; (3) 58 women have received training in small scale business development to promote women’s economic empowerment in the target communities; (4) 105 community consultations were held, including 1409 women, to determine community needs and develop plans to meet these needs through project inputs; and (5) 80 fish traders were trained in Juba and Nimule on sanitary operating procedures.
