Description

This project aims to improve the ability of emerging leaders in developing countries to implement innovative solutions to development challenges, influence public policy and take on key decision-making roles in their countries. The project provides training at the Coady Institute to more than 1,500 women and men from government, private sector and civic organizations in four areas: (i) supporting inclusive and sustainable economic growth; (ii) building resilient communities focused on food security and natural resources management; (iii) building accountable democracies; and (iv) empowering women and girls as leaders. Graduates then return to their countries and apply their new knowledge, skills and expertise to their organizations and communities. The project also establishes a global alumni network to track graduates’ progress and impact, strengthen their capacity to deliver results and ensure sustainability.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) increased application of community and asset-based approaches by development organizations directly associated with Coady graduates; and, (2) increased availability of community and asset-based approaches, tools and strategies for use by all actors in the development sector.

Results achieved

Results achieved at the end of the project (February 2019) include: (1) 860 individuals (485 women and 375 men) completed certificate courses across a diverse range of subject matter, including re-thinking partnerships, citizen-led accountability and tools, community based micro-finance for financial inclusion, and community-driven impact assessment and advocacy; (2) 145 participants (126 women and 17 men) completed leadership certificates through the Global Change Leader Certificate for Women and the Global Youth Leader Certificate for young women and men (aged 20 to 30); (3) 173 individuals (96 women and 77 men) graduated from the 20-week Diploma in Development Leadership, designed for community development leaders; and (4) 86% of on- and off- campus respondents (85% of women and 87% of men) reported applying, or planning to apply, their new knowledge and skills in development practice.
