Description

March 2014- Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration. IOM’s mandate is to: ensure the orderly and humane management of displaced populations; promote international cooperation on displacement issues; assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems; and, provide humanitarian assistance to targeted displaced populations. IOM's main activities include: the provision of emergency services and protection assistance to displaced and returnee households; assisting governments and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to implement third country refugee resettlement programmes; providing assistance to refugees who wish to voluntarily repatriate to their countries of origin; and, facilitating the orderly return and reintegration of internally displaced people. With DFATD's support, IOM's 2014 emergency operations in the Philippines, Sudan, South Sudan and Zimbabwe will provide assistance and protection to an estimated 990,000 displaced people affected by natural disaster, conflict and political instability.

Expected results

Expected outputs include the provision of: emergency assistance, such as emergency shelter, healthcare, non-food relief items, and water and sanitation facilities to targeted displaced populations; transportation assistance to returning displaced people; support to returnees to resume their livelihoods; support to former combatants to enable them to reintegrate into their communities; and, technical assistance to governments and other humanitarian organizations in the management of migration issues. Expected intermediate outcomes include: the reduced vulnerability of crisis-affected people, especially women and children.
