Description

This project seeks to prepare the next generation of innovative leaders in sub-Saharan Africa to actively contribute to their local and global communities and to advance economic prosperity, social justice and equity in Africa. The project supports promising young African professionals to become leaders in public policy and administration by providing scholarships for 120 to 130 young women and men to complete a Masters' degree in public administration in Canada. The goal is to provide these future leaders with high-quality academic training as well as professional training by exposing them to Canadian practical and relevant public sector expertise, experience, innovation and best practices in governance, public policy and administration in both social and economic sectors. This project is co-funded with The MasterCard Foundation, a global, independent organization that collaborates with partner organizations in 46 countries to create opportunities for all people to learn and prosper. The African Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships Fund was created in honour of the late Nelson Mandela.

Expected results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased relevant knowledge and leadership skills of female and male graduates in key public administration and policy sectors in sub-Saharan Africa; (2) increased understanding and application of Canadian best practices in governance, public administration or policy in African contexts; and (3) increased leadership roles of female and male graduates in key social and economic sectors in Africa.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2022) include: (1) the program received annual cohorts of scholars from 2015 through 2019, and by March 2021, a total of 109 scholars (49 women and 60 men) had graduated with a Master’s degree; and (2) The graduates now work in key public administration and policy sectors in their home countries. These outcomes are in keeping with the ultimate objectives of the program, namely providing young leaders with high-quality academic training so they may contribute to local and global communities to advance economic prosperity, social justice, and equity in Africa.
