Description

This Volunteer Cooperation Program sends190 volunteer advisors to work with local organizations in developing countries. The program aims to improve food security and sustainable economic growth by focusing on: (1) training of beneficiaries in agriculture; (2) agricultural and livestock production; (3) marketing and entrepreneurship for market development; (4) job creation and income generation; (5) nutrition, sanitation and protection of natural resources; and (6) organizational development for participation and mobilization of development actors. The program also supports a public engagement program to form a body of Canadian citizens who are educated, informed and engaged.

Expected results

The expected intermediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased capacity of developing country partners to deliver sustainable development results, in response to local needs, by making use of the skills and expertise of qualified Canadian volunteers; and (2) enhanced participation of Canadians in Canada’s sustainable development efforts.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2020) include: (1) 138 volunteers contributed to strengthening the capacity of 44 partners in 8 countries, who have received ongoing support, training and tools to sustain the results; (2) a total of 15,961 direct beneficiaries and 56,112 indirect beneficiaries have improved their economic, social or ecological well-being; (3) 89% of the supported local partners identified an improvement in their skills, knowledge and abilities to deliver services to their communities; and (4) 43,149 people have supported and are interested in Canada's international development efforts through the various activities and events led by SUCO. These results have contributed to the increased capacity of project country partners to achieve sustainable development results that meet local needs.
