Description

This project supports Jordanian communities hosting significant numbers of Syrian refugees by providing a safe and healthy environment and bolstering confidence in municipal services. The project seeks to improve solid waste management services, infrastructure and working conditions at Al-Akedir, the second-largest landfill in Jordan. Project activities include: (1) increasing the landfill's physical capacity; (2) improving landfill management capacity by providing staff with financial and technical training; and (3) improving processing efficiency by replacing worn-out machinery. The project also seeks to improve economic opportunities for local residents, especially women and youth, by designing, constructing and operating four recycling receiving stations and a sorting centre.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved solid waste management infrastructure and services in the governorate hosting the largest number of refugees in Jordan; and (2) improved economic opportunities for local residents, especially women.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (June 2019) include: (1) 16 women secured jobs through the launch of the Composting Packaging Site; (2) the construction of new main waste Sorting Center and a storage hanger; (3) the rehabilitation and upgrade of the existing Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Transfer Station in Northern Shouneh and the construction of a new MSW transfer station at Al Taybeh Al Jadeedeh area; and (4) intensive community and Community Based Organisations engagement to form "recyclables receiving green points" operated and managed by 60 women for the three targeted municipalities.
