Project profile — Syria Crisis - Emergency Assistance for Vulnerable People in Lebanon - NRC 2015

March 2015 - The humanitarian situation in Syria continues to deteriorate as a result of the civil war and intensified violence in the country. The United Nations estimates that 12.2 million people inside Syria, including 5.6 million children, are in need of humanitarian assistance. Combined with 3.8 million Syrians seeking refuge from the conflict in neighbouring countries, this is the largest number of people displaced from conflict in the world. Women and children are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and host countries are increasingly overstretched by the influx of people fleeing the conflict. With DFATD’s support, the Norweigian Refugee Council (NRC) is providing housing unit rehabilitation for people displaced from Syria. Project activities include: (1) providing 2,800 vulnerable conflict-affected people living in Lebanon with housing rehabilitation and emergency shelter support; (2) providing water treatment solutions, regular water quality monitoring and water storage for 2,700 Syrian refugees; (3) providing sanitation services such as hand-washing stations, maintenance tool kits, safe bathing spaces, adequate sewage disposal systems as well as solid waste management solutions; (4) conducting hygiene promotion on water handling and safe hygiene practices; (5) training and supporting water, hygiene and sanitation (WASH) committees; and (6) providing up to 10,000 refugees with legal information and counselling.

The expected outcomes for this project are: (1) vulnerable households affected by displacement have adequate shelter, with a secure period of tenure, within the host communities; (2) increased access to sanitation facilities and water for drinking, cooking and personal and domestic hygiene; and (3) increased access to legal services and counseling. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
