Description

This project aims to increase the awareness and understanding of criminal justice obligations set for the United National Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2178 amongst policy makers, lawmakers, and senior justice criminal justice officials from each of the ten ASEAN countries. The project also works to compile information regarding the level of implementation of the preventative terrorism offences seen in UNSC Resolution 2178 and other relevant UNSC Counterterrorism Resolutions. Project activities include: (1) facilitating a regional conference focused on the criminal justice challenges associated with emerging terrorist threats; (2) developing a conference report providing an overview of Southeast Asian countries status with regards to the implementation of preventative terrorist offences, with focus on criminalization provisions under UNSCR 2178; and (3) distributing this report amongst CT officials of ASEAN countries, ASEAN secretariat and other partners.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) increased motivation by policy and lawmakers in Southeast Asian countries to implement criminalization provisions under UNSCR 2178 and other relevant UNSC resolutions; and (2) increase knowledge by policy and law makers of South East Asian countries strengths and weaknesses of the existing legal infrastructure to prevent and fight emerging terrorist threats.
