Project profile — Haiti Consensus Roadmap

Haiti prioritizes Copenhagen Consensus Center is a research and outreach project that analyzes and promotes the investments necessary to achieve the best results for Haiti, socially, environmentally and economically, with optimal use of each gourd spent (local money). This project involves hundreds of sectorial experts, months of research and collaboration with the decision makers of the most valuable development strategies for Haiti. Imparted with knowledge on those solutions that work, and with an increased understanding of where a gourde goes furthest, the public, youth, opinion leaders and decision makers will be empowered to focus more on some of the most incisive solutions for Haiti.

The project aims to: 1) produce a cost-benefit roadmap developed by top economists of the best development solutions for Haiti, and 2) provide to Government of Haiti and the international community involved in the country a shared and coordinated development priorities agenda.

Results achieved at the end of the project include the production of studies on the following investment options: 1) improve the legal regulatory framework to create conditions for the development of an independent, accountable and efficient electrical utility; 2) fortify wheat flour with iron and folic acid to reduce the number of deaths and cases of anemia; 3) engage early childhood at the preschool level to increase the incomes of these young people when they reach adulthood; 4) train first responders in order to reduce the number of deaths; 5) increase immunization coverage for infants in order to save lives; 6) provide health care to pregnant women and newborns; 7) increase access to sexual and reproductive health services; 8) ensure that skilled birth attendants provide appropriate care during deliveries, including neonatal resuscitation and clean postnatal practices; 9) increase the penetration rate of mobile broadband communication service to accelerate exchanges and potentially stimulate economic growth; 10) install a specialized system to automate customs procedures at the Port de Cap Haïtien to reduce port service costs in order to increase customs revenues and reduce contraband.
