Description and results

The project seeks to improve the safety of girls, boys and youths at school and enable them to develop in an inclusive, violence-free school environment that is conducive to learning. The goal is to build the capacity of teachers’ unions in their efforts to stop school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV). This involves testing, replicating and generalizing innovative approaches that create ongoing teacher engagement to combat SRGBV. Activities include the following: (1) conducting learning workshops, participative knowledge-sharing sessions, and coaching and mentoring activities; and (2) organizing conferences, symposiums and media activities. The beneficiaries of this project are union members in countries of focus, as well as girls, boys and youths in the school environment.

Expected results

The intermediate expected results of this project include the following: (1) improved, sustainable practices for combatting school-related gender-based violence among select unions in eight sub-Saharan African countries; and (2) enhanced advocacy at the regional level and stronger South-South cooperation among the various regional actors, with a view to eliminating school-related gender-based violence.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of March 2019 include: (1) 175 union staff and members have directly participated in Gender Action Learning Workshops on how to address School Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV). This project has directly reached over 571 individuals (of which 157 were women); (2) across all 7 countries in which this project operates, 69,787 individuals have indirectly benefited from anti-bullying and anti-sexual harassment training and workshops, through awareness campaigns and informal sharing of knowledge. This includes 5,787 individuals who participated in anti-bullying and anti-sexual harassment trainings and workshops, strategy sessions and consultation meetings; (3) 54,000 union members were targeted in a large awareness raising campaign to end SRGBV in South Africa; (4) in the Gambia, over 10,000 teachers and union members participated in a caravan to end female genital mutilation/cutting; (5) 175 school staff members and teachers were engaged in the design and implementation of Gender Action Learning peer workshops, which included addressing gender power imbalances in schools and at home, all 9 education unions participating in the program financed change experiments and other SRGBV-related activities from their union budgets; and (6) the Education International Africa Regional Office, which supports 122 education unions in 52 countries across the continent, also funded their own change experiment activities. During the 9th Regional Conference held in November 2018, the Education International Africa Regional Office adopted an SRGBV resolution. This resolution was passed by the 87 unions from 41 African countries.
