Project profile — Sudan - Emergency Assistance - International Organization for Migration 2016

March 2016 - Humanitarian needs in Sudan are mainly caused by the effects of armed conflict, which drives displacement and food insecurity, but are also caused by flooding and droughts and weak governance. Sudan has recently experienced unpredictable rainfall patterns and desertification due to the El Nino effect, which has negatively affected agricultural and livestock production across the country. Food insecurity and malnutrition constitute a nationwide crisis, with seven out of the 18 states in Sudan experiencing global acute malnutrition rates at or above the emergency levels. Humanitarian needs in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States remain almost as high, with 5.4 million people considered to be in need of humanitarian assistance in 2015 compared to 6.1 million in 2014. Approximately 3.1 million people are internally displaced by conflict and civilian strife. GAC’s support to the International Organization for Migration is contributing to improved health and living conditions and protection among crisis-affected people throughout Sudan. Project activities include: (1) providing emergency shelter kits and non-food items for up to 150,000 vulnerable internally displaced people; (2) coordination of camp management and tracking, registration and verification of up to 300,000 displaced persons; (3) providing emergency sanitation and hygiene interventions for up to 500,000 affected people; (4) providing emergency health care for up to 200,000 conflict-affected people; and (5) providing transitional or semi-permanent shelters for up to 25,000 vulnerable returnees in Darfur.

The expected immediate outcomes for this project include: (1) increased access to emergency shelter and relief items; (2) improved coordination of camp management for displaced persons; (3) increased access to sanitation and hygiene facilities; (4) increased access to emergency health care; and (5) increased access to temporary shelter for returnees in Darfur. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
