Description

Implemented in cooperation with the US State Department and the International Atomic Energy Agency , this project aims to reduce the security threat posed by Canadian-origin high activity disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) in Brazil by safely and securely removing them from the national inventory.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) consolidated 25 high-activity Canadian-origin DSRS at a central repository facility in Sao Paolo; (2) dismantled, conditioned and repackaged the DSRS; and (3) transported the DSRS to a German company for recycling.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (April 2017) include: (1) consolidated 26 Canadian-origin disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRS) at a central repository facility in Sao Paolo; (2) contracted the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa to provide and operate a mobile hot cell that dismantled, conditioned and repackaged the DSRS; and (3) transported all 26 Canadian-origin DSRS in March 2017 to Gamma Service Recycling GmbH in Germany for recycling.
