Description

October 2016 – On October 4, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm, tore through the Caribbean causing widespread damage, flooding and displacement in Haiti. Hurricane Matthew has resulted in the largest humanitarian crises in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, with an estimated 1.2 million people affected. Complete information on humanitarian impact is expected as relief efforts get underway. With GAC’s support, the World Food Program (WFP) is helping to meet the immediate food needs of hurricane-affected people in Haiti and assist in the coordination and delivery of assistance. Project activities include: (1) distributing relief food to meet immediate needs; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women; and (3) providing vouchers and cash transfers for food.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to food for hurricane-affected people; (2) increased access to micronutrient supplements for vulnerable groups, including children and pregnant and breastfeeding women; and (3) enhanced coordination of the response. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or acute food insecurity.
