Project profile — Supporting Sustainable Peace in Ukraine

The purpose of this project is to further the Minsk Accords by bringing together senior stakeholders and decision makers at the international, national and local levels to address issues of common concern. The goal is to facilitate discussions regarding security, political arrangements, economic relations, ecological risks and reconciliation. The project aims to build greater trust and confidence amongst the parties in an effort to find a lasting and sustainable resolution to the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine. The Government of Canada remains committed to support Ukraine as it pursues a reform-oriented policy agenda, necessary for building a secure, stable and prosperous country.

The expected outcome for this project is to facilitate and contribute to international efforts at finding a lasting and sustainable solution to the armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine, which began in 2014.

Results achieved at the end of project (July 2020) include: (1) increased trust between interested parties from Ukraine, Russia, the US, Germany and France. This made possible by facilitating at least 6 exchanges between decision makers from Kyiv and Donbass, and 4 exchanges between senior representatives for the participating states; and (2) supported the re-establishment of societal links across the line of contact by sharing ideas emerging from the dialogue process. This includes the discussions on reassessing the economic blockade, promoting joint projects across the contact line, and rehabilitating Donbas after the conflict, with government authorities in Kyiv, the business community and relevant international actors.
