Description

This project aims to help establish specialized teams within the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) to detect, prevent and respond to attempts to smuggle nuclear or radiological materials across its borders. Project activities include: (1) providing radiation detection and identification equipment, and ancillary gear, to JAF’s counter-nuclear smuggling teams; and (2) providing operational interagency training on ensuring a coordinated response to such a smuggling attempt.

Expected results

The expected outcome of this project is the strengthened capacity of the Government of Jordan to prevent the illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radiological materials along the full length of its borders, particularly along its “green border” where no formal crossings exist (e.g. informal crossings or known smuggling routes).

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (September 2018) include: (1) increased access to radiation detection and identification equipment such as dosimeters; and (2) increased knowledge and awareness by over 100 personnel from the Jordanian Armed Forces, Gendarmerie, Public Security Directorate and other stakeholder agencies on the fundamentals of detecting nuclear and radiological materials. This also includes effective guard force management at facilities housing such materials, developing an integrated emergency response plan for nuclear security, and other relevant topics.
