Description

March 2017 – Eritrea is facing a serious and ongoing humanitarian situation due to both the effects of recurring drought and the exodus of an increasing number of youth facing the prospect of national military service. The Eritrean population is facing high levels of food insecurity and acute malnutrition and less than half of the rural population has access to safe drinking water. Overall, an estimated two million people (about one third of the population) requires humanitarian assistance. With GAC’s support, Development and Peace is providing health and nutrition, water and sanitation, and livelihoods support to an estimated 76,000 drought-affected people in the Anseba, Debub, Maekel, Northern and Southern Red Sea, and Gash Barka regions of Eritrea.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved access to healthcare and nutrition support; (2) improved access to safe water and sanitation; and (3) improved food security and livelihoods opportunities amongst drought-affected Eritreans. The expected ultimate outcome is lives saved, suffering alleviated and human dignity maintained in countries experiencing humanitarian crises or that are food insecure.
