Description

Since late January 2008, Madagascar has been hit by two cyclones and has experienced heavy rainfall on most parts of the island. The resultant floods have affected heavily populated areas, including the capital city of Antananarivo, and damaged important farming areas. An estimated 239,000 people have been affected and require life-saving assistance in the food and nutrition, health, shelter, and water and sanitation sectors. CIDA's contribution is helping the World Food Programme (WFP) address the emergency food needs of the disaster-affected populations. Activities include providing supplementary feeding to treat malnutrition for 6,300 children under five, and emergency food assistance to meet the immediate and medium-term food needs of an estimated 200,000 people.
