Description

Flooding in August 2007 and successive poor harvests, compounded by increasing prices for staple foods, have led to the largest food gap since 2001 for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a country of 23 million people. Signs of deteriorating food security have prompted the World Food Programme (WFP) to urgently expand food distributions to reach 6.3 million people, from the original 1.2 million caseload. CIDA's contribution is supporting WFP to help mitigate the disproportionate impact of the increase in food and fuel prices on the most vulnerable and to assist in the recovery of livelihoods of those affected by the severe flooding in 2007. Activities include mother-child health and nutrition activities; distributing food rations to primary school children, elderly people and other vulnerable groups; and providing food for community development activities.
