Description

Ongoing conflict in Sudan has left millions in need of humanitarian assistance. Overall, more than 5.2 million Sudanese are internally displaced and of the more than 500,000 living abroad as refugees, 260,000 are in Chad. In Darfur, an estimated 4.2 million people are reliant on some form of international assistance due to ongoing fighting between government forces and rebel groups. With CIDA assistance, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is helping to support the needs of refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the ongoing conflict in Darfur, both in Darfur itself and in eastern Chad. Activities focus on contributing to a safer environment in IDP settlements; strengthening protective mechanisms and increasing local capacity to respond to the needs of vulnerable groups; supporting the creation of an environment which is conducive to voluntary return in safety and dignity and which reduces the risks of further displacement; and facilitating the provision humanitarian assistance through camp coordination and camp management.
